Privacy Policy

What we collect, what we do not collect, and what happens to the data used by the checks on this site.

The short version

We collect one thing on purpose: the first name and email address you type into the opt-in form, and only if you choose to submit it. The interactive checks on the home page run inside your browser. We do not receive, log or store your IP address, your DNS resolvers, your leak results or anything you type into the password field.

The Email Opt-In

If you submit the form on this site, your first name and email address are sent to AWeber, the email service provider we use to store subscriber lists and send messages. We use that information to deliver the resource you asked for and to send follow up emails about online privacy and the products we recommend.

We do not sell, rent or trade your email address. Every email we send carries an unsubscribe link, and using it removes you from the list immediately. AWeber processes your data on our behalf and applies its own privacy terms to the data it holds.

The Interactive Checks

The home page runs four checks. Each one behaves differently, so each is worth describing on its own.

  • Public address. Your browser asks a third party public address lookup service what address your traffic is arriving from, and displays the answer to you. The request comes from your device, not from our server, and the result is not sent to us or stored anywhere by us. The lookup service sees the request in the same way any website you visit sees your address.
  • DNS test. Your browser sends a small number of randomised lookups and then reads back which resolvers answered them, using a third party DNS test service. Again the requests come from your device. We do not receive or retain the list of resolvers.
  • WebRTC check. This runs entirely inside your browser using its own built in capability. Nothing is sent to any server by this check other than the standard address discovery request your browser makes.
  • Password strength. We ask you to type a lookalike password rather than a real one, because the check scores the shape of the password and not the word itself. The field is not inside a form and has no submit button, so what you type is scored by code running on your device. It is not transmitted, not logged, not stored and not recoverable by us. Closing the tab discards it.

Because the address and DNS checks rely on third party services to work at all, those services necessarily see the request your browser makes to them. That is the nature of a connection test. It is also, in a smaller way, the point the page is making.

Cookies And Analytics

We may use standard analytics to understand how many people visit the site and which pages they read. Analytics of this kind may set cookies or use similar storage in your browser, and may record general information such as page views, referring source, approximate region, device type and browser.

Affiliate partners may also set a cookie when you click an affiliate link, so that a resulting purchase is attributed to this site. Those cookies are set by the partner under their own terms, not by us. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time.

Affiliate Relationships

This site earns commissions from affiliate programs. When you click a link marked as an affiliate link and go on to buy a subscription, we may receive a commission from the provider. The price you pay is not affected. Affiliate links are marked directly beneath the button that carries them.

Your Choices

  • You can use this site and run every check without giving us any information at all. The form is optional.
  • You can unsubscribe from our emails using the link in the footer of any email we send.
  • You can request that we delete the email address you gave us by replying to any email you have received from us and asking.
  • You can block cookies, block scripts or use a privacy extension. Blocking scripts will stop the checks from running, which is a reasonable trade and one we do not object to.

Children

This site is written for adults and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the age at which consent is required in their country.

Third Party Sites

Links on this site lead to services we do not control, including the VPN provider we recommend and the lookup services the checks use. Once you leave this site, the privacy policy of the site you arrive at applies to what happens there.

Changes To This Policy

If we change how the site handles data, we update this page to match. Continuing to use the site after a change means the current version of this policy applies to your use of it.
